What is a deep plane neck lift?

A deep plane neck lift addresses not only the superficial layer of sagging skin but also the deeper structures of connective tissue in the neck called the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System). By firming the SMAS layer, Richmond Plastic Surgeons ensures long-lasting, elegant changes in the jawline, submental region, and lower neck.

Deep plane neck lift vs. neck liposuction

Neck liposuction is performed to trim stubborn fat from the jawline and submental area, slimming the profile. This is an effective sculpting tool, but it is not enough when it comes to addressing drooping layers of skin and vertical muscle banding in the neck. A deep plane neck lift can firm the underlying neck muscles while eradicating redundant skin folds, creating a tighter, more youthful aesthetic. Liposuction can be an add-on treatment with a deep plane neck lift to help remove pockets of excess fat.

What are the benefits of a deep plane neck lift?

A deep plane neck lift comes with a wealth of benefits for patients, both physically and emotionally. These include:

  • A slimmer, more sculpted profile
  • More elegant, tapered neck contours
  • Correction of submental fullness (a double chin)
  • Improved definition in the jawline
  • Increased separation between the chin and neck
  • A more flattering fit in shirts and tops
  • Inconspicuous scarring
  • Natural-looking results
  • A boost in self-confidence and self-esteem

The ideal candidate for a deep plane neck lift

As a first step along your treatment journey, one of our Surgeons will meet with you for a private consultation to determine your candidacy for a deep plane neck lift. They will examine your skin quality, review your medical history, and engage in a frank discussion regarding your goals for improvement. A deep plane neck lift may be ideal for you if:

  • You desire a customized rejuvenation approach with dramatic, long-lasting results
  • You require a more in-depth solution than is possible with conventional neck lift surgery
  • You have more extensive skin sagging, muscle banding, and wrinkles
  • You are a healthy non-smoker who is free from any uncontrolled medical concerns
  • You are both optimistic and realistic in your expectations for your results
  • You are willing to follow the doctor’s instructions before and after surgery

What can I expect during my procedure?

A deep plane neck lift takes about 1-3 hours to complete and is performed under general anesthesia, ensuring you are asleep during the whole surgery and unable to feel any pain or discomfort. Thin incisions are created beneath the chin and/or within the hairline around the ears. These openings allow your Surgeon to gain access to the deeper muscles, connective tissue, and fat in the neck so that she might manipulate the different layers to create a seamless, age-defying result. Once the neck contours have been lifted and excess skin has been trimmed, the doctor will close your incisions with fine sutures and place you in the recovery suite for monitoring until you are able to return home.

What will the recovery process entail?

After a deep plane neck lift, patients usually need several weeks of rest and recuperation. As with most surgeries, you may experience swelling, bruising, and soreness in the treated region that will peak in the first few days and then gradually lessen over the coming weeks. Your doctor will make sure you receive prescriptions for pain medications that will ensure your healing journey is stress-free. At night, make sure to sleep with your head in an elevated position to reduce swelling. Avoid lifting anything over five pounds and keep your neck facing front; do not twist or turn your neck. Within about 7-14 days, most patients can resume work, provided that their jobs are sedentary. It will take about 4-6 weeks before exercise can be resumed.

Enjoying your results after a deep plane neck lift in Richmond, VA

Your results will slowly emerge over around two months as swelling gradually dies down. Incisions are well-hidden, and your scars will be inconspicuous, slowly fading to thin white lines. You will likely enjoy the elegant changes from your deep plane neck lift for 10-15 years. You will continue to age normally, but your neck contours appear firm, sculpted, and elegant.
