Breast augmentation is a very popular procedure for both younger and older women in the Richmond area. Augmentation can help boost your confidence by enhancing your natural curves, or by restoring your body after pregnancy or aging. The procedure can be performed at various life stages, enabling women to remove or replace their implants at their discretion. At Richmond Plastic Surgeons, we offer breast implant removal and revision for women in Richmond, Midlothian and surrounding areas of Virginia.
What Does Breast Implant Removal Involve?
Breast augmentation enhances your breasts in a relatively short period of time, giving you an immediate confidence boost and improving your self-image for years to come.
But we all grow and change, and it’s natural that your self-image priorities might shift over time — this is where breast implant removal (also known as breast implant revision) can help. This procedure can completely remove your implants, or even replace them with a shape or size that better suits your bodily desires.
Breast implant removal and revision is also performed if an implant ruptures or migrates out of position.
What Are the Benefits of Breast Implant Removal?
There might be several reasons you’re considering breast implant removal. Some of the most common include:
- Wanting to either enlarge or decrease your implant size
- Looking for a better balance between your appearance and how you feel about yourself
- Switching your implant type (going from silicone to saline, or from rounded shape to teardrop)
- Removing your implants altogether and restoring your natural breasts

Contact UsWhat Should I Expect on The Day of My Breast Implant Removal?
Your surgeon will use the same incision sites that were used for your original breast augmentation whenever it’s possible to do so, minimizing the need for additional scarring.
In some cases, though, new incisions will be used to properly remove or replace your implants, and address any issues they may have caused. At this point, your surgeon will carefully remove the implant, before examining the soft tissue and locating any problems that may have been caused, such as scar tissue or silicone leakage, for example.
If a new implant is needed, it will be inserted through the same incision. When your surgeon is satisfied with the results of the procedure, the incisions will be sutured closed, and your breasts will be wrapped with a comfortable compression garment to hold everything in place.
What Can I Expect After My Breast Implant Removal?
You’ll experience a bit of bruising, tenderness, swelling, along with some and mild to moderate discomfort after your breast implant removal. These symptoms should only last for about a week, but the swelling can take several weeks or months to subside completely.
The healing process after a breast implant removal procedure is quite similar to what followed your original breast augmentation: You’ll need to limit your activities and rest up, as instructed by your surgeon.
